2021 VE Testing

SARA VE testing dates are being established for 2021.

SARA VE team has preliminary plans to test in June, 2021 as a 'restart' with an outside testing session. Keep watch here for future details.

TENTATIVE PLANS:

Location: McCurdy Park in Corunna, MI (outside picnic table) [wx?]
Date/Time: 'June - 26' @ TBD {3:00 PM Paperwork / testing 3:30} P.M.
(This is Field Day Saturday)
Details: Face Mask (required) and Social Distance Enforced.
Our test team is almost 100% Covid vaccinated.
Other: We need plans for remaining 2021 'even numbered' months - locations TBD.
Currently we have no location for holding test sessions.

We will ask about your vaccine status. We will require a contact phone number and will make a temperature check when you arrive. We will use the State of MI COVID meeting status to establish our guidelines for the testing sessions.

Covid 19 Impacts VE Testing

We have set June 26, 2021 for a test session at McCurdy Park, Corunna {Outside}.

SARA held a successful outdoor session for June, 2020 but were unable to resolve issues for further testing in the rest of 2020 calendar year. This has continued into 2021. SARA will hold an outside testing session June 26, 2021. We will be watching the COVID 19 impact and hope to restart more regular testing as soon as feasible in 2021. Our major issue has been our testing location is under lockdown and not allowing people in the meeting space.

Remote Online Ham Exams

Some VE organizations have setup 'do it at home' online exam sessions. SARA's suggested path right now is through Ham Study. org. Read their right side 'blog notice' (Press Release), then do the 'Find a Session' link at top of right side links. This is a "free" study and testing site ~ Ignore the 'Buy the App' link - it will tell you it is free. Checkout blog.hamstudy.org to connect to their blog.

Our local SARA group found some local concerns and will not pursue remote testing at this time.

FCC Registration - Pretest Requirement

ULS & FRN System ~ You MUST register with the FCC to obtain or change an amateur radio license. The Universal Licensing System (ULS) and FCC registration and filing systems were deployed in the Amateur Service on August 16, 1999. To conduct business with the FCC, you must register through the FCC COmission REgistration System [CORES]. You will be assigned a Federal Registration Number (FRN). This number will be used to uniquely identify you in all transactions with the FCC. To conduct business with the FCC you must register in CORES (COmission REgistration System) and receive your FRN (Federal Registration Number) before sitting for an exam. This is to ensure your license is processed quickly and accurately through the FCC's ULS (Universal Licensing System). To do this you must register through FCC CORES and be assigned an FRN. If you are already licensed, you have already registered ~ Check your license on the database to obtain your FRN.

View the FCC web page New Users guide to ULS for step by step instructions on the registration process. The FCC has taken great strides to make the ULS and the CORES easy to use and has devoted a section of their website to the Amateur Radio Service. Discussion suggets that a "valid e-mail" address will be a requirement to interface with the FCC (probably early in 2021) You should estabilish your method to meet the new requirement, we would suggest using a 'Gmail' or 'ARRL' based (if already licensed) as these reflectors can establish a longterm 'common' address at the FCC. The FCC is going 'Green' which means interfacing with them will become 'all electronic' and if your e-mail goes invalid then your license will be terminated.

Bring you FRN with you to the test.

SARA Testing Schedule [ARRL Ham VE]

Sara's {normal} Testing Schedule Information

We ask for you to Preregister for testing - See Tom Carpenter informaion above. If there are no 'Preregistered Requests' we DO NOT HAVE A TESTING NIGHT!! {Traveller Beware}

Current Scheduling is follows. Testing is generally on the "fourth Thursday of even months except February and June". If there is a holiday on that Thursday, then there is no testing for that month ~ mainly Christmas. We skip June's 'regular testing' and use our Field Day site (on Saturday). February is 'many VEs are snowbirds'. Please reserve your testing in advance to avoid confusion. The paperwork starts at 6:30 P.M. & Testing promptly at 7:00 P.M. Please arrive by 6:30 P.M. to allow paperwork completition prior to testing.
EXCEPT for Field Day which is a Saturday ~ see below.

If there are no "Pre" registrations for testing we cancel the test session... again travelers beware! Check in with Tom Carpenter. Some of our VE's travel 30 miles to and then from the test site, so they need to know if someone is coming.

You can email: ki8as78 "at" gmail.com (replace "at" with @) or Phone: (cell) [989] 277-2262.

We are hoping that 2021 resolves issues around Covid 19 and that we can resume 'regular testing'.

Please check in advance with Tom Carpender for testing details, especially for February, June and December dates.

SARA's Regular Amateur VE Test Location:

This is the location of the Shiawassee County EOC!

James P. Capitan Center, 149 E Corunna Ave., Corunna, MI 48817 (lower level - entrance SE corner of building).

We use a 'Special Field Day Testing Site' for June ~ Shiawassee County Fairgrounds on Hibbard road south of Corunna. Hoping this year it can return to Shiawassee County Fairgrounds in Corunna (June 26).

One more time -- We do accept 'walk-ins' if you really are last minute, but PLEASE check in with Tom, BEFORE coming to the test session ~ [517] 802-1259 (cell). If we have no 'pre-testing registrations' we cancel the test session... travelers beware! As some of our VEs travel some distance, they are called when we have a need, no one preregistered - then they stay home.

Bring along a photo ID, copy of license (if any) and certificates of completion (if any).

Licensing Information at ARRL - Link

The ARRL has a list of the number of FCC licenses by license class and state web page (US only). ARRL License Counts.

A "SPECIAL INVITATION" to attend our SARA Club Meetings!

Let us take this moment to issue a special invitation to you to come to SARA meetings! We welcome all visitors. Newly licensed hams get the first calendar year of SARA dues for free (sorry, not for 'upgrades'). Come and checkout the club and meet our members! [Currently just 'Zoom' meetings.]

We (normally) met in the James P. Capitan Center, Lower Level; 149 E. Corunna Ave.; Corunna, MI on the "first Tuesday" of the month at 7:00 P.M. Enter via the East Entrance (may need to knock loudly, as building requires access clearances), just get us to notice you to gain entry. Come on in and visit with local hams and see what we are up to!

Due to Covid 19 we are using 'Zoom Meeting' as a video meeting space. See SARA Meeting Information for full details.

Perhaps we can provide an 'Elmer' to assist you in first getting started and for that next upgrade. If you do not need help, perhaps we can use you to 'Elmer' someone else on a topic. See our SARA Meetings link for full details!
