SARA Video Call Setup

Visitors are Welcome to our club meetings!

Starting in March, 2020 due to Corona virus [COVID-19], social isolation became very important. In order to accomplish our club meeting actions, we decided to do a "video conference" style of meeting via Zoom Meeting (was Google). Thinking all members may not have experience using this technology, we will try to deleiver a method for you to setup a computer system for checking into a video conference. You will need access to a computer system with sound card and preferably with web camera capabilities.

PLEASE I/we need your help in verifying the following process, so email what you find as you apply this method: Email us : W8QQQ. I have no method of verifying this method, as all my systems have already been through this process.

Restating: You will need a computer with sound input/output and preferrably a web camera. Most newer laptops have these 'built in'. Many desktop systems can have these added in. We assume you will be able to work this step out on your own. We believe you can call in from a smart phone for 'conference call' {phone only} type connection.

We are aware off potential security potential on the Zoom application but we do not believe we have sensitive infromation we will be discussing. Be aware that anything said on the call may be picked up and conversations should NOT be considered confidential.

Overview of Chrome for Video Conference Setup:

A 'Gmail' email account is highly suggested and we believe that Google Chrome will be the best web browser to support our efforts.

See our W8QQQ Google Group or email Secretary - Phil Bates for Zoom link information if you do not have it already. We will probably start the call about 6:50 PM and lock out new connections to Zoom about 7:10 PM ~ helps security. The following are the steps you need before the attempt to connect:

  1. Get/use a Gmail email address. Gmail Site.
  2. Download/Install Google 'Chrome' Web Browser. Google Chrome Page.
  3. Video conference invitation link is first in list below. When you enter that link you will automatically link to the call.

Several of the SARA members have been using video conferencing in the ARES group and it has worked well. As I/we get feedback on this process, this page may change quite frequently - so watch for changes.

The club radio station, W8QQQ, has been making progress. Phil Bates and Denis Phillips installed the HF antenna on Wednesday 25 March. The EOC is under 'lockdown' and only essential personnel are allowed in at this time (Corona virus). They are very busy on the Corona virus activities. There is a guard to pass to gain entry. Note the Shiawassee county Health Department is on the first floor and the EOC is in the basement.

We activate the club station, W8QQQ, for many contests and by appointment under 'normal' operation conditions. Contact us for arrangements if you would like to reserve and use our station, W8QQQ.
